The Artist (PG-13) This silent, black-and-white retro story of Hollywood's transition to talkies is a charmer, one of the best movies of the year. Director Michel Hazanavicius salutes 1920s Hollywood with a familiar story. A silent star (Jean Dujardin) helps a young chorus (Berenice Bejo) girl get her start, then fades away himself. Fine for families. 3.5 stars.
Shame (NC-17) Michael Fassbender gives a gutsy, painfully real performance as a sex addict. Carey Mulligan is equally unflinching as his troubled sister, who shows up on his doorstep and upsets his lifestyle with psychological games. Little insight as to causes or history, but gripping. Graphic sex, language, nudity. Not for kids. 3 stars.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (PG-13) A mildly autistic boy (Thomas Horn) seeks the lock that fits a key left behind by his father (Tom Hanks), killed on 9/11. His mother (Sandra Bullock) seems incapable of helping him, but a mute mystery man (Max von Sydow) tags along. A moving journey through grief, back into life. A bit intense for tweeners. 4 stars.
