MADISON, Wis. — Ten matches up, 10 matches won for the No. 7 Nebraska wrestling team Sunday, beating Wisconsin 36-0.
Five of those matches came in bonus-point fashion, as the Huskers picked up their second shutout of the season, moving to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten.
The win marked the first time since 2004 Nebraska has had two shutouts in the same season and was the biggest victory margin over a Big Ten opponent in school history.
Wisconsin dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
Nebraska won three bonus-point matches in a row, starting when Shawn Nagel (125 pounds) won his first Big Ten match of the season, a major decision over Austin Hietpas 11-0. The Kimball, Neb., native racked up a takedown in the first period followed by five nearfall points.
The next two bonus-point wins came from junior Ridge Kiley (133) and freshman Jake Sueflohn (141).
No. 19 Kiley won his third major decision of the year, as he took down Shane McQuade 12-0, while No. 5 Sueflohn recorded a 3-point nearfall as time expired against Thomas Glenn to capture his second technical fall of the season, 17-2. Sueflohn, who was wrestling in his native state of Wisconsin, improved to 18-5 on the year and 4-1 in the Big Ten.
Nebraska senior James Nakashima (197) won a thrilling match to open the dual by taking down Jackson Hein 7-5 in the second tiebreaker. After an escape by Hein in the second overtime to take a 5-4 lead, Nakashima recorded a takedown then an escape. Nakashima has won four straight Big Ten duals and has gone to overtime four times in his last five matches, winning three of them.
In the only match that featured two nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 6 Robert Kokesh defeated No. 13 Ben Jordan 13-4. After a scoreless first period, Jordan earned an escape and a takedown to give the Badgers their only lead in any match and the only offensive points recorded by a Wisconsin wrestler. But Kokesh put Jordan on his back in the third period to rack up five nearfall points and the major decision.
No. 9 Tucker Lane won his 20th match of the season by taking down Cole Tobin 5-0. The heavyweight is now two victories away from recording his 100th career win.
Freshman Brandon Wilbourn (149) broke a four-match losing streak with his 10-4 decision over Frank Baer, and No. 8 James Green (157) used three first period takedowns against Shawn Perry to grab an 8-5 decision.
Tyler Koehn (174) won his fourth straight decision over a conference foe with an 8-3 win over Scott Liegel, while No. 7 Josh Ihnen (184) concluded the dual with his third major decision in a row, defeating Timmy McCall 11-1.
The Huskers return to action for senior night Friday when they take on defending national champion Penn State at 7 p.m. at the NU Coliseum.
